Dear Lawrence, Shari, and Devra- Christie and I were shocked and distressed when we learned of Charles’ death by calling Joy after Yom Kippur. It was then clear to us that Joy’s condition had deteriorated, and apparent that she was requiring increased homecare assistance. With some trepidation we called again last week only to get a continual busy signal that ultimately prompted a Google search. That’s how we discovered that Joy had died on Jan. 1. Needless to say, we are deeply saddened to know of Joy’s death and we are reflecting on how much we’ll miss her. The two of us can barely imagine how overwhelming the loss must be for the three of you and we hope that the strong support of family and friends is making your grief a little easier to bear. We listened to your beautiful and accurate words at the funeral (on YouTube), and our sincere wish is that the thoughts you expressed will always be with you. Christie and I feel so fortunate to have connected with your parents at this senior stage of our lives. The reunion was the result of Joy’s amazing Cohen ancestry research efforts and family gathering. She planned and executed the weekend festivities with all of the elegant style that each of you referenced in your eulogies. A year later we spent a magnificent time at Parry Sound and her wonderful hospitality have made memories of that visit indelible too. Our regret is that contacts with Joy and Charles were infrequent (phone calls) and too short. We always talked about opportunities for getting together but unfortunately they didn’t happen. Nevertheless, we feel blessed to have been able to connect with your dynamic and impactful parents who brought so much joy, humor, and love to the many people they touched.

I extend my condolences to Joy’s beautiful and caring children and grandchildren. I met Joy in high school and since then we shared a long, meaningful, fun and active friendship. We loved to be with our Familia group – seven couples that together learned about many aspects of life. Joy and I supported each other when we joined the work force in the Jewish community. We used to meet for lunch and chat. Joy was always ready to try something new and different that enhanced all of our lives. I will miss her.

I did not attend the service today but I watched online and was very much there in spirit. And what a moving service it was! Sitting at home, I was brought to tears several times, swept up by the beautiful and moving tribute to Joy Cohen. Everyone spoke with such clarity, intention, authenticity and emotional honesty. Together the speakers painted a portrait of strong woman of great depth, wisdom, drive and investment – a caring, generous, fun and kind person who was adventurous, curious, artistic, informed and very organized. Joy’s strong guiding influence was very evident today and it is clear that her legacy is firmly embedded in her children and grandchildren. I have wonderful memories of Joy and feel lucky to have been in her orbit. I share my deep condolences with Devra, Shari and Steven, Laurence and Dara, and the extended family. And also with the Familia, the group of friends and their children who feel a profound sense of loss in the passing of Joy, and months ago, Charles. The Familia mourns with you. As Devra so eloquently said, “Joy has quietly taken her last run” but she will live on in the hearts of everyone who admired, respected and loved her. Today’s service was a fitting tribute to a remarkable woman who will be very missed.

e treasure the time we spent with you parents, Charles and Joy, at the Excellence. They were such an integral part of our community here. Charles was a wonderful addition to our Board and contributed greatly. Joy was gracious, kind, generous, and an invaluable member of our holiday choir. I, personally, loved spending time with them both, talking about India and their many travels. They were very proud of their children and grandchildren, and spoke lovingly of you all. May their souls rest in peace.

Lawrence, Shari, Devra and the entire SpiegelCohenPosen family, As we watched the funeral we were so taken by all that everyone had to say about Joy. We knew she was amazing. We shared happy memories of going to The Festival of the Sound in Parry Sound with Joy and Charles with dinner either before or after the concert. We had visits at each other's cottages. We saw Joy and Charles when they spent a couple of winters in Longboat Key. These memories and experiences will not be forgotten. We will miss Joy, the organizer and arranger of many happy times together. Rest in peace, Joy. Love, Barbara and Stanley

Dearest Shari, Lawrence and Devra: I am sending you all my love from Calgary and from all our family. We Nettletons were your old Warlock Cresc neighbours a block away who the Cohens so gratefully introduced us to big city North York ways (and especially cottage life) when we moved from Calgary in the mid 60s. I shall be thinking of you all and especially tomorrow as you bid your fine mother, Joy, a deep, loving and fond farewell. Your mother, Joy, was just that - a great joy to everyone. The photo is so perfect and is the very essence of Joy. Always (mostly) smiling. She was so kind and always very welcoming. She and your Dad were a great team - great friends, confidents, and obviously great parents. You all will have important lessons learned, stories, funny moments, sentimental treasures and memories, traits and traditions from time with both your parents that will carry you far in life. Keep them close and cherish them. Sending you all big hugs. Until we will meet again. Sharon Nettleton

Well coifed and smiling. :) Lawrence, Shari and Devra, you were blessed with wonderful caring loving parents, and I know that from first hand observation. My childhood memories are filled with beautiful times and funny stories with Joy and Charles. At the cottage, as neighbours and on all the trips we took together. They were like an Aunt and Uncle to me and my sisters. I am forever grateful for having them in my life. I know that you will miss your parents dearly and am so sorry for your loss. Steve and I are so sorry to hear about the passing of Joy. I have known her all my life and she was like a close aunt more than a family friend. Joy inspired me to play piano, provided arts and crafts and music for us at the farm, and her and Charles are the reason all the Leipciger’s ski. So much of my childhood is connected to both Charles and Joy and Steve and I both have so many happy memories with them. Joy brought her creative spirit to everything she did and we will miss her dearly.

“Joy” in Hebrew means “Simcha”, in Yiddish it is “nachas”. These are two words that aptly describe my friend Joy. She brought “nachas” into every Familia “Simcha” that we planned. And of course there were the more personal times that we shared as two couples. I miss those and now I miss my dear friend. May her memory be for a blessing.
